Hayek contra Pangloss on Evolutionary Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
Some analysts have criticized Friedrich Hayek’s theory of cultural evolution for implying that the rules, customs, norms, and institutions that emerge from the evolutionary process are necessarily efficient or desirable in all cases. This charge is unfounded. The present article defends Hayek versus his critics in two ways: First, it restates Hayek’s own objections to the idea that cultural evolution produces optimal outcomes. Second, it shows, through an analogy with biological evolution, that Hayek’s theory need not imply any such conclusion. Contrary to a widely held misconception, biological evolution does not produce organisms that are perfectly adapted to their habitats; insofar as cultural evolution shares common features with biological evolution, cultural evolution may be expected to display similar types of suboptimality or mal-adaptation. Insights from the theory of biological evolution also help to illuminate some areas of controversy with regard to Hayek’s theory of cultural evolution, including: Hayek’s advocacy of gradual change; the question of what selective forces drive the process of cultural evolution; and the alleged conflict between group selectionism and methodological individualism. متن کاملFrom Group Selection to Ecological Niches Popper’s Rethinking of Evolution in the Light of Hayek’s Theory of Culture1
Hayek’s The Sensory Order contains a physicalistic identity theory of the mind. Popper criticized it, saying that it could not explain the higher functions of language. Hayek took up that challenge in a manuscript but failed to refute Popper’s arguments. Drawing upon the same manuscript, Hayek developed a theory of behavioural rules and cultural evolution. Despite his criticism of the theory of...
متن کاملHayek and Modern Evolutionary Theory
Hayek was a firm believer in the effect of evolution on human behavior. This was a real advance since he wrote in a time when most social scientists believed in the “blank slate” (Pinker, 2002) and denied the influence of biology on human actions. Moreover, Hayek got the basic outline of the problem right. Most of human existence has been spent in small groups (25–250 members) and many of our t...
متن کاملEvolution and the Rule of Law: Hayek’s Concept of Liberal Order Reconsidered
HAYEK’S WORKS WOULD SEEM to be divided into two distinct parts that cannot be logically combined (Wilhelm 1972, p. 179f.). On the one hand, Hayek postulates a “legal framework of general and abstract rules” (Gray 1980) on whose basis a spontaneous order arises in the form of individuals’ interaction (Hayek 1960, pp. 148ff.). This framework must fulfill certain criteria in order to guarantee a m...
متن کاملLessons from Pangloss: User Encounters with Uncertainty
Pangloss implements “Optimistic Visualization”, a method that gives analysts confidence to use approximate results for exploratory data analysis. In this position paper, we outline some ways in which user experiences with an approximate visualization system did not match analysts’ intuitions. These observations have implications for the design of future systems that expose uncertainty to users.
